Re: sugested dinghy size

Hi David, A number of years ago a former PDQ owner posted a pretty comprehensive analysis of this topic on his blog site (http://snodoglog.com/). I believe it's still there if you're interested. After a fair amount of research we recently replaced our original fiberglass dinghy with an aluminum hull...

Re: wiper arms?

Hi Mac, you too eh. I guess that settles it. Did you have much difficulty cutting it with a hacksaw blade?

Re: wiper arms?

Thanks for the comments Duane. I removed the second set screw and banged away for awhile today, but unfortunately it was not enough to free the arm. I have a feeling I may have to cut off the existing arm and replace it, as you did.

Re: wiper arms?

It's our turn to replace one of our wiper motors and this thread has been very helpful in pointing us in the right direction. That said I'm still unsure whether to go with the AFI 34000 or AFI 71082 model, both of which I can source at a competitive price in Canada. Their performance specs appear to...

Re: Intermittent hour meters

After ongoing issues with our Yanmar hour meters - and online research that indicted any repairs would be temporary at best - I decided to install two independent digital units (purchased online for about $16 each, although cheaper versions are available). I wired each unit to the positive and groun...

Intermittent hour meters

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has experienced intermittent operation with their digital hour meters, and if so whether you've been successful in correcting the problem. Ours are fading in and out more frequently now, and it is not clear whether they are recording data any longer. Our...

Re: Maitenance check?

Mac, ours are glued also. I'm not sure I'd be comfortable screwing them to the the base of the hull.

Re: Replaced the water heater

A second for James' suggestion. We placed starboard under our heater a few years ago when we observed the exterior was starting to rust. This has significantly slowed the deterioration process.

Re: Transmission Maintenance Schedule

Hi Mac, We had the transmission fluid and filters replaced last year, and have been doing it about every 2 years since we purchased the boat. I believe the ZF manual I have says every 1000 hours. I also heard from Tri-County when I purchased the parts in Bellingham (cheaper than in Vancouver) that i...

Re: Replaced the water heater

Thanks for sharing your experience Duane. My heater will also need to be replaced soon and I was interested to hear it was not too difficult a job. Can you share what it cost to purchase the replacement Kuuma unit?

Re: Prop pitch for 110hp engines

Larry,

We have the 110 hp Yanmar diesels (4JH4-HTE) on His Idea. Our props - on the boat since new in 2007 - are 17 x 17 4-bladed 'Hi-Torq'.

Cheers,

John

Re: Anchor Rode Options

Mac, I'm definitely no expert, however research and reading I've done over the years suggests that catamarans are designed for lighter weight and perform better when not loaded down with too much stuff (my experience has also been different than yours - I find that His Idea rides and performs better...

Re: Anchor Rode Options

Most marine outlets in Vancouver have them available as singles. I bought a couple so I would have a spare just in case.

Yes, we use the same windlass you do Mac, and the split link has worked just fine - never a problem running through the gypsy.
