Bottom of keel photo and question
I've tried to examine the photos, and I can't seem to make out a "crack". I see what looks like barnacle "cement" and some roughness. Can you insert anything into the "crack"? Is water oozing or leaking from the "crack"? I'm not sure where I gained this impres...

Re: Rigging tension numbers for a PDQ 36?
I have the standard references and have done considerable Internet research. I also have the Loos Professional gauge, the only Loos gauge adequate to "measure" PDQ-sized rigging. For 5/16" cable, the difference between 8% and 15% is the whopping difference between 1000 lb/in sq and 18...

Rigging tension numbers for a PDQ 36?
Question 01 - I've read and reread PDQ's "deflect the wires" recipe for rig tuning. My first impression is that this would make for a pretty slack rig. My second impression is that I can't imagine doing this with sufficient accuracy. Does anyone have some tension/load numbers that they cou...

And then there is the story of the PDQ 32 that capsized of the California coast in July, 2010?

Re: New Rudder Quadrant
To ease your search, the steering system on Nalani is called the Lewmar Constellation system. The tangential terminal unit that I needed/ordered is 89100111. The catalog shows ten 80 degree, constellation steering quadrants. If you have a Lewmar system, I'l bet one of those ten quadrants matches you...

Re: New Rudder Quadrant
Not quite sure which part the "steering quadrant base" is? Do you mean the actual steering quadrant (aluminum arch bolted directly to rudder post) or the tangential steering unit that turns and redirects the steering cables to the steering quadrant (aluminum rectangle bolted directly to th...

Re: Windlass and Anchor Chain
Never one to conform to the norm (more and more electrical do-dads), I installed a manual, Imtra Lofrans Royal windless (my house batteries love me). It's fairly compact, by CSY 44 windlass standards, and I've never fouled a sheet or any other line. The only complication was drilling four mounting h...

Re: Fuel Tank upgrade
The reinforcing blocks that are glassed into the hulls for 50 gallon fuel tanks would most likely not match the reinforcing blocks for the 30-35 gallon tank. So, you'd probably face some glass work to prepare to mount the larger tank. The 50 gallon tanks have two fuel pick-ups, so I have two fuel li...

Re: Boom vang suggestions
My understanding is that end boom sheeting and a long main sheet traveler largely obviates the need for a boom vang? And, that a boom vang doesn't serve the same purpose as a preventer? Are you trying to shape the mainsail or prevent inadvertent jibes?

Re: supporting the hull on a 36
I've had two boatyards decline to use the owners' manual blocking specifications. That's two out of two. Our time on the hard, on the keels and a few jack stands, is usually brief. Trying to construct a boat lift to meet the owner's manual blocking specifications would be quite a job. I do know that...

Re: Netting measurements
We sent the attached drawing and a bunch of photos to Sunrise and got a trampoline that was slightly different from the original trampoline, but still a perfect fit. I had the very strong feeling that Sunrise already knew what trampoline to build, once they saw my work.

Re: Fuel Tank Specs and Measurements
We replaced our fuel tank 15 months ago. The head of a stainless steel screw had lodged itself under the tank. The resulting electrolytic reaction holed the fuel tank. I was unable to locate/obtain drawings/specifications. I attempted to make a set of drawings, but the complexities of the drafting s...

Poor Lewmar
If you think my comments about Lewmar are unjust? I ordered those silly, expensive, plastic, interior hatch trim/screen things a few years ago and they took, yes, twelve weeks or more to deliver. So, I should have know better.

Lewmar - A new definition for "just in time" manufacturing
It's obvious that Nalani will need new conduit. Lewmar now sells only blue conduit. And, at the time of this writing, the only details Lewmar provides online or in its catalogue is that the blue conduit will accommodate 5mm and 6 mm cable (no ID or OD) (see Lewmar photo, below). 89100069 Lewmar stee...

Steering conduits and cables, 2017
Conduit Failure.JPG Conduit End Fitting.JPG Yes, it is possible to defer maintenance long after it becomes unwise. When Nalani was hauled almost a month ago, the steering system working flawlessly. No friction or functional problems of any kind. But a quick glance into the starboard stern lazarette...
