Ssailmakers in 2023 with experience building pdq 36 genoas
The old Niel Pride genoa on my pdq 36 has been damaged by getting beaten up when the furler jammed. I liked the design of the sail but the material is problematic, very stiff and prone to mildew between the exterior coatings. As the boat is in Seattle, the mildew issue has made a mess out of the sai...

Re: Furlex problem
Latest news, halyard had wrapped when I hand furled the sail. When unfurled, I was able to get the sail down by repeatedly giving the halyard a 1/4 turn on the winch then releasing it then pulling the sail down a foot or two. Did this repeatedly to get the sail all the way down. The upper swivel see...

Re: Furlex problem
My furlex has jammed with the genoa on my 36 ~ 8 feet out. It's been greased about a year ago but it is the original 1991 unit and may not have had much done to maintain it by the last owner. It appears that the upper unit no longer rotates freely. No halyard wrap. It has always been very sensitive ...

Will a current 9.9 (2020-23/ 9.9 fit in 1991 PDQ 36 well?
Posted in the outboard forum but will post here also just to make sure I can get a response in time to get the job done and go cruising. My 36 still has the original genre engines with manual tilt and block and tackle. While the current ones run, one is showing signs of terminal leg corrosion and th...

Installing power tilt motors
On my 1991 36, I am looking at replacing the original genre 9.9's~2000 with more current engines. Got to stop throwing almost worn out engines into the beast plus much improved flushing set up. looking at 2020-2023. The current ones have the original manual tilt and block and tackle lift. How do you...

Re: PDQ 36 port windows- gasket
I confess, I cheated. I had over the years two ports that had lenese some previous owner had stuck in with what looked liek clear bathtub caulk pop out of the frames. I removed the silicone and cleaned the surfaces of both the old seal and the frame with dentured alcohol to the extreme. If I remembe...

Re: outboard wiring harness - Corrosion -Should be tined wire?
I have been runing these engines for twenty plus years, this has happened several times, It usually is corrosion in the connections of the wiring harness that are covered by the box under the engine cover. Usually, a cleaning of the connections, starting with the power connection followed by dielectr...

Re: Balsa cored hatches
I finally removed the balsa from teh hatch and replaced it with a foam core. Seems to have worked just fine.

Balsa cored hatches
On my 1991 pdq 36, I have never found any wood core, balsa or plywood until I took off a lock on the forward bow hatch. Given the corrosion, I suspect the lock is original and it was never bedded. The core of this hatch has rotted. I'll dig out the rot, dry out the core as best as I can and pickle a...

Re: Stiff 1991 Lewmar hatch hinges
After examining the hinge mechanism, I don't think there is an adjustment. It is the type that has multiple stops, just stiff meaning they have had very little use. Normally these wear and cannot remain open on their own.

Stiff 1991 Lewmar hatch hinges
Friends, I have a 36 with Lewmar deck hatches. The hinges on most are too stiff and require too much force to open. Unfortunately a previous owner popped the plastic out of several then glued it back in with clear silicone without removing the original caulking. Of course sooner or later they popout...

Re: HELP structural problem with my 36
Thanks Thinwater, that is the same conclusion both the local boatwise guys came to. My plan is to grind the surfaces down to the point that I can cover them with very thin glass, 0.75 oz. to prevent the cracks from showing up. they are so think, less than 0.002" that epoxy won't fill them. But ...

Re: What is going on with my boat.
Had two pros look at the cracks in the side of the cabin. The consensus its that they are caused by the sun heating the gel coat under the black paint. The plan is to remove the paint and examine the cracks to see how deep they are. Marc

Re: What is going on with my boat.
Thanks for the reply, it is hard to figure out. I think that it has been more exposed since I did the windows, the paint over the cracks having been knocked off in the process. Possibly expansion and contraction of the previous windows over time did the damage. I don't know if water in the cracks, f...

HELP structural problem with my 36
Want to get feedback from the whole community. I have posted also in the 36 section. The boat is a 1991, outboard powered model. Stress fractures around the port side chain plates near lower windows, repaired at blue tape line. Also, a tear through fiberglass and foam at corner of upper window plus ...
