Re: Anchor Rode Options

so here's the story. our last boat was a gemini 105 (sail cat). we used an aluminium spade #10 or 20. when we bought our pdq i called spade and asked if they thought the aluminium spade would be ok. they said the size would be fine but they've had the shanks bend when used on cats so they said get t...

Re: Anchor Rode Options

hi mac, first a comment on your rope. every so often we reverse the line so that the worn part ends up in the locker. we also trim the old splice and link as thinwater suggests. we switched the windlass a few years ago and DOWNSIZED the rope from 5/8 to 9/16". reco came from lewmar. their point...

Re: Maserator pump

the key to a pump surviving is to NEVER let it run dry. once the pump runs dry for more than 30 or so secs the impeller will overheat and cease to work. so the question is how do you know when you're going to run dry. as the pump gets to the end of emptying the tank the running sound will change and...

Re: Maserator pump

hi, having gone thru the rebuild/replacement cycle many times, we switched to diaphragm in our 2003. we switched to a sealand. teamwork (2005) has also switched but to a jabsco. fix/swap in a jabsco to do your charter. my advice is to take measurements and lay out where replacement would go includin...

Re: Engine overheating

i believe the openings are oriented to the side, facing the thermostat housing. i think this orientation will make the ridge in the endcap line up with centerline of the he bundle.

Re: Nut holding rudder shaft should be checked

hi jacques,

i believe there is a bolt which passes through the shaft and i think this would prevent losing a rudder.

Re: Storing gasoline, equalizineg batteries

hi, get a 6 gal external tank and leave it in the dinghy. that has been enough for us cruising in the abacos. when we go to exumas, where gas fillups are few and far between, we carry an extra 6 gal "jerry" can on the flybridge, outdoors. probably bad procedure but we have equalized withou...

Re: Crossover water supply to Tides shaft seals

i believe that it depends on the particular shaft seal. we've had both tides and pss so i'm somewhat familiar we them. as i recall tides is pretty emphatic about needing water flow and will wear out without it. pss says you don't need water at displacement speed.

not sure it applies, but up to 2004 pdq used saltwater toilets. that may explain the extra thruhull.

Re: No cooling water at telltale and running hot.

this may or may not apply here. it's been a while since i looked at a yamaha water pump so i'm not sure this applies. when you checked the water pump did you check to see if the impeller hub had spun free of the rubber vanes? another longshot. a friend has a mercury which just stopped pumping water ...
