I have not looked into this seriously yet, as I am involved with other boat projects, but your suggestion sure makes sense for the reasons you state.

I'm no electrical engineer, but I would imagine all the utility power in the USA is likely to have the same sine wave. Peak voltage where you tap in is another story.

Sounds like it will remain a mystery for a while longer.

Breakers do wear out and fail. They are sized to protect the wiring from overheating and causing a fire, so increasing the amp rating of the breaker is not advised unless it was undersized to begin with. What about just replacing the breaker with the current size and see if the old one was just worn...

Bill, For some reason I did not get notified of other replies to this thread, so I just happened to check... Sorry about the turbo. Our port engine had a turbo bearing/seal rebuild just before we bought her and the seal on the intake air side failed pretty quickly, leaking lots of oil into the intak...

Regarding your port engine (why is it almost always the port engine?) -

In neutral, you are supposed to be able to hit about 4,300 RPM. If yours is really limited to 3,400 RPM, that itself is a real problem. As to low RPM in gear, can we assume the prop is clean?
