Re: Pearls from 2012 Owners Rendezvous

Hi Jim, James Power had several suggestions that I will ask him to cover as I hope to have cocktails with him tonight. I gave a talk on "New technologies" that, based on the questions and comments, was well received. I talked about twenty "new" things that are applicable to out b...

Beckson hatch vents

Good morning to all !! We recently noticed that virtual all of the Stainless steel Beckson vents that were used on the PDQ boats are now disintegrating below the stainless steel cover. I suspect a bad batch of plastic but in any case.... I have negotiated a bulk purchase of replacement innards (not ...

2012 Owners rendezvous

Good morning all, It has bee a couple of years since we had an Owners rendezvous so we thought we should try to organize a get to gather like the one we had two years ago at the same place, Stuart Yacht Harbor in Stuart FL. The date has been set for the weekend of January 28th and an e-mail has gone...

Anchor chain hook

Good morning and merry Christmas to all ! Carol and I like to anchor out and when doing so we always use a bridle. Over the years we have tried many different chain hooks and none worked satisfactorily, they all fell off sooner or later. So...we have just been tying the bridle on with a rolling hitc...

Re: Fuel Polisshing?

One additional note....the yanmar engines circulate about five (5) times as much fuel as they burn. thus if you are running at 3000 rpm you are actually circulating about 30 gal per hour thru your Racor filter. Run for 4 hours and you have polished your entire main tank !!!!
Safe cruising !!

Re: Racor Filters

Hi Folks, Just had to add my two cents to this discussion. We have put thousands of hours on various PDQ's all using 2 micron Racor filters with no problems. Needless to say it is MUCH better to have the Racor need replacement than the on-engine filter. The on-engine filter on our 100hp engines is a...

Re: Cutlass Bearing Replacement

Hi Chet, DUETTO's advice is right on. The "whipping" you notice is most likely caused by one (or a combination) of three things: 1. Bad engine alignment, 2. a bent shaft, 3. a worn cutlass bearing. The most likely is an alignment problem. We have encountered this on so many boats and it ev...

Re: Tides Marine Seals

Hi Ron, We have dealt with this issue (many times) and have come to some conclusions. First, in many instances the engines/shafts were never aligned properly at the factory. This fact was hidden by the flexible coupling installed between the transmission coupling and the shaft coupling. When there w...

Sharing a French Canal boat

Hi Folks, Here is an interesting one for you.... My wife and I have done several trips to France to cruise the canals there....An outstanding experience. We recently came across a great canal boat for sale and we are trying to put together a partnership (four partners) to own and use the boat. We ha...

Hi Folks, Since posting the note on the Tides red hose (dripless shaft seal) maintenance issue I have had conversations with several owners and realized that maybe a good thing has turned into a not so good thing! As you know PDW used a "Drive saver" unit between the transmission coupling ...

Re: Dripless shaft seals

Good luck Russ,
The PSS seals were a disaster when PDQ tried to use them. PSS could never solve the problem so they tried the Tide seals and eventually wound up with the "red" which with some obvious exceptions have been outstanding. I hope you fair better!!

Re: grounding rudders & shafts

Hi ! To the best of my knowledge, there is no "bonding" system on the PDQ. Each underwater metal component has it's own zinc so no bonding system is required. In boats like the Mainship they use bronz thru hull fittings that use another zinc somewhere else (thru the bonding wire) for prote...
