Which route to lower Caribbean for PDQ's

Curious as to the route which most PDQ sailors use to get to the Virgins and south. The Turks and Caicos seem to often be the launching point to the lower Caribbean via the north shore of the Dominican Republic and eventually across the Moana Straits with a stop at Moana Island before going on to So...

Re: Anyone with experience with composting head?

So the problem with the head was: * Old hoses. Replace at 10 years, not a big deal if they are flushed first. On a PDQ 32 it takes perhaps 1 hour to change them all. Use a top quality sanitation hose that is NOT WHITE. I promise you, part of any head will break at 10 years, including composting uni...

Re: Anyone with experience with composting head?

ZTC put one in... and then took it back out. With most things, people talk more about success than failures, and people hate to admit that anything was a mistake. So I think there is bias on the web. Another fair question is the effect on resale value. While some few will like it, I think you narro...

Anyone with experience with composting head?

I've heard people saying that once you use C heads you'll never go back. But I've also heard that they are pretty power hungry.

Re: What year did 9.9's get FW flush capability?

For catching the crab (or lobster) pots; if the buoy is outside the hulls while motoring you're ok. If the buoy is inside the hulls while motoring chances are you'll catch it. I've been able to clear a couple of times through the engine well without getting wet but sometimes you just have to jump i...

Re: What year did 9.9's get FW flush capability?

The old motors were easily adapted to allow fresh water flush. Some used the flush fitting on the lower unit with a hose strapped to the leg. Others drilled and put a fitting on the housing over the thermostat with a hose leading out from under the cowling. amytom. Thanks for the info. Even though ...

What year did 9.9's get FW flush capability?

Sounds like the Yamaha 9.9's have ok thrust for cruising under power (there may be differing views on this here), but the early ones didn't have the capability to be flushed with fresh water and tended to get clogged. It seems new 9.9's run somewhere between $3000-3500 per motor (?), which isn't too...

Re: Hello from Down East!

I found that the 32 felt like a sportier boat to sail. It tacks easily with the self tacking jib and it seems to respond more quickly to wind changes but when the water gets bumpy a little extra length will always make for a better ride. The 32 rarely suffers from slap under the bridge deck but I d...

Re: Diesels on PDQ's use sail drives?

36's all use saildrives. I can't speak to the 32's (I believe they use shafts). In our 8 years of ownership we bottom painted every two years. At that time we changed the oil in the drives, fitted new zincs, replaced one propeller and painted with anti-fouling paint. We had water in one drive when ...

Re: Hello from Down East!

You are correct in determining the PDQ32 and 36 are unique in terms of quality and sailing ability for cats in this size. We sail a 32 in Ontario but I sailed the 36 on charter a couple times so I have experienced them both. Our local marina could not handle the beam of the 36 so we went with the 3...

Diesels on PDQ's use sail drives?

If so, any maintenance issues? You have to pull the boat out of the water to replaces seals and do repairs? Do earlier PDQ 32's and 36's use shafts?

Noticed a cutaway of a 36, which showed sail drives.

Hello from Down East!

My wife and I live in Maine and are near the point of downsizing from our house to a condo and buying a catamaran to live aboard and cruise the East Coast to the Bahamas and possibly the lower Caribbean. We've been monohull sailors and owned a number of monohulls. Our last boat was an Island Packet ...
