rudder packing

hi all, on a particularly sloppy gulf stream crossing i found that our rudder packing needs adjustment/replacement. in another post james powers said the packing size was 1/4". i'm thinking of also using a moldable packing additive which claims to be "dripless". i have a couple of que...

Re: Shaft vibration

hi, i am not familiar with anything remotely resembling what you describe. when you describe a "vibration" i'm not sure what you mean? you're getting a "vibration" when you're rotating the shaft by hand? did you measure to see if shaft is fairly centered in the stern tube? is it ...

st600R replacement?

hi all, we're back on the boat and we found that the flybridge remote for the autopilot has gone to the great beyond. i'm replacing it with a wireless s100. in talking to raymarine tech support he asked me where my "gray computer box" is located. i told him i have never seen such a thing o...

Re: T9.9 lower end removal questions

based on what you've done, i agree with chet, it has to be the splines stuck in the bottom of the crankshaft.

hi ron,

our boat was originally set up with them facing aft. after talking and reading, i switched and have had them facing forward for 6 years.

Re: Racor Filters

hi mark,

we replace when high reading reaches 7. this is probably on the conservative side. i have discussed this with steve d'antonio in the past and he thought it was a good number.

Re: Prosine "Battery Size" Input for Trojan T-145s

yes, that would be my take. keep in mind that the prosine just uses that in an algorithm to help compute durations of the various charge phases (i.e. bulk, absorb, float). make sure that you have the battery temperature sensor hooked up also.

Re: Yanmar Engine Full Power Run Cycle

hi john,

i don't think you need to do this by the clock, but yanmar turbo diesels are designed to be rev'ed. so on average, run your engine in the 75% range and it'll be happy.

Re: exhaust elbow

chet,

in the past, i've used marinetex on exhaust systems. if you can build it up, better on the inside, it usually will hold. the 2 parts can't vibrate though.

Re: exhaust elbow

are we talking about water outside engine (i.e. on trans, mounts, etc) or water inside of the engine? i've had the elbow off on one engine and the pipe that delivers the water into the exhaust is angled down, at least normally, and shouldn't have gotten into engine through exhaust ports. turbo impel...
