Re: Refrigeration

I have one of the old front loading ice boxes. I installed a "Cool Blue" cold plate / compressor and have been very happy with it. I also have a portable ac/dc smaller Engel freezer we keep in the garage (aft port bunk) and LOVE it. It and our water-maker are the two best things we've ever...

PDQ36 sail-to-motoryacht conversion

Motoring along at excruciatingly slow speed for hours and hours the WHOLE way from Key West to Pensacola gave me lots of time to fantasize about converting my PDQ36 sailboat to a motor yacht with 40s or 50s propelling it along at 15-20+ kmh. Here’s some ideas that come to mind… First is whether to t...

Re: Nearly DONE

As a toy-lover, I must say how impressive all of this sounds. On the other hand, the older I get, the more stuff I'm pulling off of my boat. Here's the caveat to "He who dies with the most toys wins"... "He with the most toys dies from all the maintenance!"

Re: Jellyfish in my AC Intake

This works only when tied up at at dock or at anchor... You can take a sturdy bucket and drill holes all over it, creating a giant sieve. Then attach 4 bungee cords to the top of the bucket equally spaced apart. Next run lines to to the end of each bungee cord so that the top side of the bucket can ...

Okeechobee Waterway to completely close

Here's a heads-up for anyone planning on using the Okeechobee Waterway this summer. The St. Lucie Lock & Dam will be drained and completely closed to boat traffic to repair manatee protection devices. Heres the tentative schedule:

Closed: beginning July 14.

Open: by Labor Day, Sept 1

Re: Leaking seals.

My experience that you will have to keep repeating temporary fixes until you pull the window, clean off all of the old bedding(s), and replace all of it with new bedding. Might as well bite the bullet cause sooner or later, you'll have to. Ed

Re: Haul out / Storage / Insurance in Florida

There is another very large storage facility on the canal between Ft Myers & the Lake O. I can't remember the name of it but I believe that they do handle large cats there. I haven't mentioned it before because they don't allow owners to visit there boats when on the hard (duh!). I know you're t...

Re: Haul out / Storage / Insurance in Florida

American Custom Yachts may be OK for storage, but be VERY cautious about having any work done there. I had the worst experience of my 35 year sailing career there. A terribly unscrupulous company that will rip you off every way possible. I wouldn't recommend them to my my worst enemy.

Re: Lightning Strikes

It may be a myth, but I’ve heard that wrapping your PC or other precious electronics in aluminum foil and then placing them inside your metal stove will protect them from the pulse… so I do it religiously every time we get into bad lightening. I’ve heard that the problem with catamarans is they prov...

new 2003 Yamaha 9.9 spares

I have a collection of NEW spare parts for the 2003 9.9 Yamaha that was assembled based on analysis of the most common repairs needed. I assembled them as back-ups for when I sailed down to Honduras. Listed below are the parts, along with msrp prices. Retail, the whole set would total $938.72. I'll ...

Re: foam in inflatable pontoon

If you can't repair the leak yourself, as a last result, you can always take it to a dinghy repair shop. I've bit the bitter, swallowed my humility, and resorted to using a pro once when I had a leak right on a seam and couldn't fix it myself... I'm so glad I did. :)
