Re: iPad navigation program

+2 for Navionics For 2 years I had been using Garmin BlueCharts to compliment my old RayMarine E120s, but got sick of Garmin failing to regularly update their charts, particularly bad stretches where the buoys have been moved years ago, but Garmin still shows the old locations. Reading all of the Ac...

Re: LP Gas Hose

Mac, How John routed the gas line is exactly how I did it (although mine continues to near the davits where my grill is mounted). To answer your other questions: - To protect the gas line I used wire loom slipped over it. - The fitting I used where the new gas line exits the propane tank enclosure i...

Re: LP Gas Hose

Mac, We call our rear top our T-top & we have our grill mounted down by the davits so much of what I said doesn't apply to you ... but your job will be even easier! From the propane locker I used a vapor-tite fitting (like PDQ used), then up & over the first partition, then a drilled hole (l...

Re: LP Gas Hose

If you have a rear T-top with a frame & brackets like ours, it's easy. I started at the propane locker with a vapor-tight bushing thru the back of the locker, then route over the partitions while protecting against abrasion. At the location of our T-top support, I drilled out from the rear locke...

Re: Life Line Replacement

Good timing as we just went thru this. First we tried to save what we had by stripping off the white vinyl & soaking the SS in an acid bath. They looked better, but after a few months started rusting again. Next I researched Dyneema, but was put off by the initial high cost, as you need to buy s...

Thanks Dick! I feel better now - This is what I get for reading the instructions!

Re: Phantom Screens

If they are only replacing the screen (they call it the mesh), you shouldn't need the measurements. When ours was replaced, they just had "blank" meshes they cut down in width & length to match.

Re: Cabin window treatments

Bob- These "pleated" style of shades is what we were originally looking for ... Are they "RV" style with cords coming down to the bottom of the window to keep them taut & reduce swinging/banging with wakes, or Are they ordinary household shades? If so, how do you handle wakes...

Cabin window treatments

Looking at replacing our curtains with more modern pleated shades. Two issues come up: Unless you use RV style shades (which have strings coming down under tension to hold the shades taut), how do you prevent clanging of the shades with wakes at anchor? What do you do about the angle of the windows ...

Re: Crossover water supply to Tides shaft seals

I've decided not install a crossover hose, but will refrain from running on one engine - didn't often anyway. Henry on SnoDog had evaluated efficiencies & found that you didn't really save much fuel unless running under 6 knots. The only change I'm planning is to replace the cheapie hardware sto...

Re: Crossover water supply to Tides shaft seals

That's what I used to do with my sailing cat - with folding props. However, the drag & torque on a large, fixed, 4-bladed prop locked in place by the transmission at 8 knots would be tremendous. I checked the ZF transmission manual & it states you can (safely) leave the transmission in neutr...

Crossover water supply to Tides shaft seals

Do any PDQs with the Tides or other dripless shaft seals have a crossover supply line for operating with one engine? The water injection to the seal provides cooling & lubrication. Their instructions clearly state this is essential, as the "off" engine still has the shaft rotating - he...

Re: Deck washdown thruhull

On our 2006 Hull #100, the washdown thruhull is 2' forward of the holding tank thruhull, under the same head floorboard - so you would see it right there. Maybe yours was installed later on in a different location? Don't know where else would make sense though... Follow the intake hose from the wash...

Re: Phantom Screens

Definitely want to recommend the same Phantom Screen rep Roger used, Joe @(561)324-2444, who covers Florida's central east coast. While you need an appointment 2 - 4 weeks in advance, he did a great job, even coming out to a mooring at Vero Beach City Marina. For ONLY $85/per unit (door and/or front...

Re: Towing a RIB?

Alan, After 4 months this winter in the Bahamas, using our dinghy every single day, I know what you mean about the chore of continuously hauling & launching. However, I agree with the others about - just do it. We have towed it just once all winter - 3 miles at 6 knots. At low speeds/short dista...
