Re: Yanmar Replacement Diesels

Fred and Gary: I'm sorry that I can't offer any help, but if you don't mind, I would be interested to know how many hours you got from your 2GM20's before they had to be rebuilt or replaced and what the principal cause of death was. We have about 1,650 hours on ours (1994) and hope to get a few more...

Re: Dinghy davits dimensions?

Eric: Actually, that's more good news than bad news. I have become disenchanted with my metal fabricator here (a serious lack of follow through on his part) and have decided to wait until we get back to the boat to deal with the davits in Florida. Besides, time is getting a little short since we pla...

Re: Dinghy davits dimensions?

Bob etal: Here's the applicable IRS form with instructions: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f5695.pdf As you can see in the instructions, it refers to your "main home" which it defines as " generally the place where you live most of the time" -- whatever that means. As my old tax ...

Re: Dinghy davits dimensions?

That's a good point, Bob. It also occurred to me that they will need to weld a padeye on each davit as an attachment point for the dinghy block. While they're at it, them may as weld a couple of gussets on as well. It certainly can't hurt anything and may not add much to the total cost. Besides, tho...

Dinghy davits dimensions?

We need to replace Sunshine's (PDQ 36) factory-installed dinghy davits and I'd like to have them built here in Indiana before we return to the boat in November and set sail for Mexico and Belize. Since the boat is in Florida and since I don't know the dimensions of the davits, I wonder if anyone cou...

Re: Isla Mujeres and Cancun

Hi, Ed: Thanks for the reply. We could spend all winter down there. It all depends on what we find when we get there. We'll be there at least a month and may stay for the whole season and venture farther down to Belize and maybe to Rio Dulce if things are going well. We flew to Belize several years ...

Re: On our way south

Mike:

If you guys find yourselves in Key West in early December, we'd love to meet up with you. We'll be there several days while we provision and catch our breath for a trip down to Cancun.

Enjoy your trip down the ICW and best wishes,

Re: PDQ Chesapeake Raft-up (or just meet-up)

We're still planning to attend the SSCA GAM from September 24th to 26th at Camp Letts, Annapolis.

Anyone else?

Isla Mujeres and Cancun

Has anyone been there recently? Margaret and I plan to go down in December and maybe spend the rest of the winter in that area and points farther south. We would appreciate any suggestions or recommendations regarding charts, guide books, anchorages, marinas, places to go, things to do, etc. We'll p...

Re: Windward or Leeward engine when motor sailing

In the past, we have nearly always used the starboard engine since that's the one that's plumbed into the water heater tank. Now, y'all have me wondering whether that's such a great idea. Maybe we need to use the port engine more and pay better attention to the movement of the boat and the effect on...

Apparently, the salvage operation was a success. Here's the latest from Latitude 38:

Re: PDQ Chesapeake Raft-up (or just meet-up)

Shucks! it appears that we won't be able to make it since we're planning to drive to the SSCA's Annapolis GAM in late September and can't justify two trips so close together. Last year's cook-out was great fun. Thanks again, Eric and Bonnie! If anyone else is planning to attend the GAM, let us know....

PDQ 32 capsizes off California coast

Terry Green brought this incident to our attention and tells us that the correct name of the boat is "Catalyst" and not "Calypso" as this article says: http://www.mercurynews.com/california/ci_15440298?source=email Even though the article doesn't say so, it was a PDQ and it appar...

Re: Shoot Thru or Just Thru Thru

Tom: Like the other Sunshine, we also use a Garmin 545S and wouldn't leave home without it. Actually, before I bothered to RTFM, I tried to mount the transducer externally on the inboard side of the aft end of the starboard hull. This, of course, didn't work because of all the water turbulence. That...
