Re: Electric gremlin

John and Diane, Thanks for the post. It got a little stranger. I spent about four hours trying to understand this problem. The water heater is less than a year old. The wiring is fine. It had to be something on the panel itself. After much wire tracing, and making sure that I understood A+B parallel...

Re: Dinghy Hoist - added winch

Duane, Thanks for this, and especially the pictures. We did a similar thing on our old sailboat. We ran the engine hoist lines directly to a jib sheet winch. The ratio was one to one, but the winch was so powerful, a Lewmar 44, that it did not matter. It was quick and easy. After that, hoisting up t...

Re: Electric gremlin

Here's another electric gremlin. Last year the water heater blew its breaker and the main breaker for the entire panel. I assumed that the heater had shorted. I did not bother to replace the heating element, I just replaced the whole water heater. It worked as advertised for eight months. Now, less ...

Re: Bahamas crossing

Bill,

Thanks. I have Kobelt controls, but I don't think I can pull the lever out to run in neutral. I will try it again.

Re: Bahamas crossing

Duane, You say in neutral you can get 4300 RPM. How do you put the engine in neutral? I am forced to start in neutral and any increase in throttle puts the transmission in gear. I guess it is called single lever control or something. Do you have the original engine controls? Do you disconnect the tr...

Re: Bahamas crossing

Bill,

We usually cross from Miami to Bimini. Typically, we travel at about 7 knots so we steer to the south a little to account for the current. Best advice is to not go directly into it. We came across from Bimini to west palm beach Friday in ten hours.

Photo does not show much. See previous post for venting. I did nothing and I worked.

Re: Gas Oven Installation on our PDQ 34'

Well, I have performed the acid test on the ENO oven chimney/vent installation. We baked a big coffee cake for breakfast because we are sitting in the rain waiting for the weather to improve and had plenty of time. Not going anywhere not even ashore. The coffee cake came out of the oven at about 8:3...

Re: Windlass and Anchor Chain

Our Quick windlass has died in the southern Bahamas. I am pulling it up hand over hand. The shallow water helps a lot, but if it is windy it is actually kind of dangerous. We motor forward and I pull up the slack chain and snub it with a chain hook attached to the center cleat with a short piece of ...

Re: Port Tachometer and hour meter not working.

Bill,

Bit of a tropical wave passing just now. We are waiting in Staniel Cay for things to dry out so we can make our way back. If it is your first time, take plenty of spare parts. The Abacos are fine this time of year. Avoid the winter months. Go further south.

Re: solar panels?

David, The hard top has aluminum ribs across about every two feet. I drilled and tapped (threaded) into the ribs and screwed brackets made of 90 degree aluminum to the top and same thing to the panels. Did not thru-bolt and put sealer between the brackets and top. No problems, leaks, or regrets. I a...

Re: Port Tachometer and hour meter not working.

My port tachometer dies occasionally. Both lower and upper helm tacks on the port side fail at the same time. I found that it was the electrical connection on the flywheel sender. I pulled it off and on several times. Could not get in there with WD40. It is hard to get to. We have been in the Bahama...

Re: Gas Oven Installation on our PDQ 34'

I ran out of time so I did not modify the trim. Did not want to miss a season in the Bahamas. Probably hire a carpenter for the trim. The electronic ignition is powered by a AA battery in a holder connected to the oven by unnecessarily long wires, probably three feet. It is just lying in there next ...
