Re: Prop Zincs

Thanks, Russ. I'm going to talk with the boatyard guys tomorrow to sort this out.

Re: Prop Zincs

One of my prop zincs needs to be replaced. The diver who checks our boat after each charter told me the Port zinc is loose. We replace both prop zincs every year in Feb when we haul the boat. However, our shipyard records indicate they used a "C" is the size zinc, not "D" as seve...

Re: novacool fridge

Tim, as I mentioned in an earlier message, my boat does not have a genset and my port bow locker does not have a vent. That is why I have the exhaust fan venting into the locker where the auxilary fuel tank is.

Re: novacool fridge

My wire run was different and actually a lot easier than I anticipated. Also, I did NOT replace the existing 14 AWG wire. Instead I ran a new 10 AWG wire along the same path as the 14 AWG wire. I was then able to use BOTH wires for powering the fridge and exhaust fan. Using both wires reduces line l...

Re: novacool fridge

The locker you refer to is not vented on my boat (I have a Webasto hydronic heater, not a genset). Therefore, the only option for venting on my boat is thru the next locker where the AUX fuel tank is (which vents air into the chain locker).

Re: Propeller size for the 100 hp engines.

Duane, Could you comment a bit more about how you handle the task of cleaning out the turbos on the 100 HP Yanmars? I've never done that and the diesel guys here implied it is not so simple to take it apart. And, I don't see a section in the 4JH3-HTE service manual I have about maintaining the turbos.

Re: Propeller size for the 100 hp engines.

We ask our charter guests to not exceed 2800 RPM... which is approximately 75% of 3800 RPM. This is based on what our local Yanmar diesel experts advise. These guys deal with diesel engines on a lot of commercial fishing boats as well as recreational boat like ours in Puget Sound. They said these en...

Waxing / Poliishing our PDQ

There is a LOT of surface to polish on a PDQ! We tried the DIY approach. Killer. We tried different products and bought a West Marine electric buffer. We gave up. It was long, hard work and the result was NOT really that good. Then we tried our local boatyard. They did a "fairly" decent jo...

Re: Propeller size for the 100 hp engines.

The combination of: 1) new injectors; 2) adjusting all valves: 3) have both shafts balanced; and 4) having both props pitched to 17"x13" resulted in massive improvements: • WOT of 4000 rpm (up from 3400) • Speed increase to over 18 knots (flat water, no wind) • Significant decrease in engi...

Re: novacool fridge

Here's pics of our fridge exhaust fan project. The controller is based on a nifty Qianson DC 12V 1A Automatic PC CPU Fan Temperature Control Speed Controller Case Fan Governor <https://is.gd/ggqorz>. This DC12V governor can be auto controlled according to the ambient temperature of the fan speed. A ...

Re: novacool fridge

I completely agree with Russ’ assessment and his modifications. I just completed a similar set of modifications to our Nova-cool fridge (other than the external thermometer). My focus was to decease amp loss on the wiring, increase air flow and reduce the ambient temp in the fridge compartment. Seco...

Re: novacool fridge

Thanks, Russ. That is exactly the route I'm heading - a good quality pancake fan. Given our cooler temps, we wanted it to: a) be thermally activated; b) have an On/Off switch for the winter months; and c) able to do a manual override to increase / decrease the speed.

Re: novacool fridge Exhaust Fan

Russ,

Could you clarify how you wired your exhaust fan? What fan is it? Is it on 24/7 or did you install a switch or a thermally activated switch?

Re: Flybridge seal with upper deck

By the way, I found a good online source for high quality marine grade butyl-based hybrid-elastomer bedding (Bed-It Tape). This is what I believe was the original tape used to caulk our flybridge structure to the deck. "Due to EPA regulations, the old school butyl used by boat-builders 30-40 ye...
