Reefing
Ed, We tend to use True, and tend to reef early, since it is ususally in building winds, and it does not reduce performance that much. The advantage of True is that when making a turn from downwind you do not see a sudden large increase in the apparent wind. Ideally you can monitor both true and app...

We have a 35 lb Delta and a 16lb Fortress on Second Wind. The Delta (plow) would always drag in the Chesapeake, but the Fortress (Fluke) held very well in the Chesapeake mud. The Delta is good on the west coast of Florida, and was fantastic in the Bahamas last winter. We tried the Fortress in the B...

Pulling Up
Check that one of the slugs is not upside-down. Also Dry-Lube Spray helps. Also make sure the mainsheet tension is released, as well as the reefing lines. Any off these can prevent the main from going all the way up.

Propane Hoses
Roger, We replaced everything, including the gas cylinders, when the OPD requirement occured. We have 10 lb. steel tanks with hand tightened fittings, and new hoses with a divider to the pressure gauge and house fittings. We ordered all of the stuff when we were in Baltimore from West Marine. We had...

Lines & Fenders
Mike, Use the biggest diameter fenders you can store, you will need at least 4. A couple of fender boards are not a bad idea either. 5/8" line is prefferable. As far as length goes, we keep at least 4 -50' lines onboard. We tie alongside, from the outboard hull and spring both directions from t...

We have a 35 gpd-not nearly big enough. I'd figure on one that will make at least 15 gph. That way you'll make enough in an hour of electric production to be generous for a whole day. Spectra seems to be popular. Ask Roger Ford on Kokomo about them.

PC Chartplotters
While I agree with Sandy about the cost factor, I believe that no one is using a PC as a primary unit. We all have PC's onboard for retrieving e-mail, Internet access, letter writing , etc. The other factor is that an affordable color Chartplotter with a screen size which matches a PC does not exist...

Ed, We're using the Captain Software onboard Second Wind. We have 2 PC's with the software loaded, so that we can use either one. We are using an old Garmin 45 to feed GPS info to the unit (The display on the GPS is half gone.) It works well except for positioning the GPS to maintain a steady signal...

PDQ"S
Second Wind is in Punta Gorda. We took about $35K in damages from Charlie after a boat drifted down on us and broke the lines. She rode through 155 mph sustained winds with 180 mph gusts against the pilings of a neighbors dock. The surveyor commented that he had looked at 4 cats that day and our PDQ...

WHY?
The best answer is Quality of Construction, better general layout and roominess, and twin engines.
