Hooray for PDQ

Posted by Jack Coulter on December 11, 1999 at 06:38:51:

Allow me to use this forum to just say thanks to the folks at PDQ, especially
Lynne Sheahan, Debbie and Simon. When we picked up "MOJO" Nov 4th, one of PDQ's
techs told me that one of the engines was "acting up" a bit, and they had
reported the problem to Yamaha(MOJO is fitted with 9.9 ob mtrs) of Canada. This
engine continued to be a sorce of headaches, not starting, dying (usually in the
middle of a lock) and in general, just not running right. We aptly named the
stbd engine "The Evil Twin". Coming from Annapolis in glorius tail winds of 25
to 29 knots, they engine finally gave up life with a tremendous metalic noise
and enough smoke to control the mosquito population in Solomons. Limping into
Solomons, we found a Yamaha dealer, High Tide Marine, this turned out not to be
such a great find. I was first informed that the engine had no warranty that it
was an "export engine." This was straightened up by Lynne @ PDQ, but Yamaha's
counter part in the USA drug their feet for three days before OK'ing the
warranty repair. It was found to be a $.22 "O" ring, of course the engine had to
come completely apart for this repair. The repair, when I finally got underway,
lasted about ten minutes. More mosquito control and noises. Having lost already
three days and now singlehanding, I decided with these good tail winds to bring
her "on home" with the one good engine and sails. The local Yamaha dealer here
in Oriental, NC tore down the engine again and after dye testing found that the
engine had a hairline crack in the piston dome, he also added that it was more
than likely this had been like this since day one. At this point I no longer
wanted this particular engine aboard my vessel. After being rebuilt once, would
you want another complete rebuild on an engine with only 100 hours of use? I
don't think so! It's now been three weeks of going back and forth with Yamaha
USA and Yamaha of Canada , both wanted to just repair the engine and let's try
it again. No thanks! Lynne at PDQ was aware of this problem and was helping all
she could, but hey, you know, PDQ didn't build the engine! Christmas came early
for me yesterday morning, Lynne called and informed me that PDQ felt that I had
had enough and that the factory(PDQ not Yamaha!) was going to ship out a brand
new engine. Being in the marine industry for quite a few years, this type of
service is unheard of! All they were obligated to do was to sympathize with me,
this is above and beyond my expectations from PDQ. I still love the 9.9 Yamaha
motors and have been a user of Yamaha outboards for 10 years. It was just a case
of one particular engine getting through QC and ending up as one of my engines

I do think Yamaha dropped the ball, after one complete rebuild, I felt quite in
line to ask for a new engine, since there was only 100 hours on this unit

Pardon me for rambling on, but I just wanted credit to go to some outstanding
people and PDQ. Many Thanks. Jack on "MOJO"
