Galley cabinet modifications

Post by amytom »

I have one of the older hulls with the upright fridge. Next to the fridge is a cabinet that appears to be useless.

I want to modify it so it can actually serve some purpose. Here are some pictures of it out of the boat.

I was thinking of pulling the drawer aspect out and just putting hinges on the door and completing the box in the rear for a tall but skiny cabinet. Any suggestions on use or modifications.

BTW I already modified the slide out cutting board underneath the fridge into a drawer with a silverware tray.

I wish I knew the answer. I can tell you that my daughter, who has smaller hands than I, filled the cabinet with silverware and spices and it took me 20 minutes to get the stuff back out! The openings in mine are smaller. I like the cabinet, though. I intend to simply make the openings much larger so that it would be a useful spice and utensil drawer.

On my 95 32 that cabinet is for silverware. It slides out and has 3 draws, one each for knifes, forks and spoons. Works well - Roger Wood

I have just ripped out the cabinet below the free standing fridge. You will be surprised at the additional storage that you gain. The original design Hull #008, had a 10" cabinet plus a cutting board drawer. Now I have 24 inch depth storage area that will store a cooler. As far as the three drawer cabinet next to the fridge, It works well for me. 1st drawer stores galley tools, second knives, third drawer has spatulas, large wooden spoons, etc. Gus Hevia, Sarasota Fl.

Hmmm, extending lower cabinet? An excuse to break out the power tools :) I'd like to see pictures of your setup if you have any.

I haven't taken photos yet, but have cool other ones when I completely redid the cabin upholstery, but more importantly, installed auto bilge pumps and lateral beams in the bilge so the teak floor is now solid as a concrete sidewalk. Don't know how to add phots here anyways because i'm new do this thing and the forum. I'd like to learn how to add photos to my sign on logo. All the best, Gus

The space under my fridge is a single large cabinet

Post by thinwater »

without divisions, and it works very well, as you say, for coolers, large groceries, etc. I am considering some movable/removable shelves, but, I will not give up the option for big item storage. It does have a door.

When extending the lower cabinet did you guys maintain the removable bottom for access to the transducers? Or do you have the speed and depth transducers in a different place?

Again any pictures are greatly appreciated

Transducers

Post by thinwater »

In my 32 they are all in the starboard compartment between the the holding tank and the head. The bulkheads make that a sink-proof location - useful, because when I took delivery the speed unit it was leaking badly. the owner removed the transducer and replaced it with the storage plug after the sea trial, but did not get it in right.

By all means, use the forward area for transducers.

Hmmm, I thought the transducers were installed at the factory. I guess they weren't standard. I have the ST60 Tridata with the depth and speed transducers under the lower cabinet in the galley. This area is seperated from the bilge so I can put in the plug without getting the whole bilge wet. On the stbd side between the holding tank and the bulkhead I have an internal transducer for the Raymarine C70; this will probably be changed to a standard transducer during the next haul-out.

Having the transducers in the galley I think would be more convenient. Swapping the plug while hanging upside down on the holding tank would mean not using the speed at all.

Yup, hanging from the holding tank is ammusing.

The pipes in the ribs (padded with towels - not so bad) are the best part. But I'll deal with it: I like the idea of it being a sealed compartment. It is a pain, so generally I leave the plug in and use the gps for speed, though the apparent wind function of the instruments is lost; I don't really care. As long as the baffle comes significantly above the water line, you should be OK. I promise you, they can leak... which at least gave me a good opportunity to be certain my installed and portable sump pumps work!

Well, here's my answer to the cabinet. I made an open space the equivelent of the old cabinet and framing. The inside of the door was damaged while removing the old slide out. The damage was coveed with a whiteboard for the grocery list. The edges of the metal whiteboard were covered with 1" edging from SailRite. The little pocket on the bottom is for steak knives.
