Replacing Mast, Boom and Crosbeam on PDQ32

Post by Huggi21 »

Hi , Iam looking at purchasing A 1996 PDQ 32 ,but there is an extreme amount of corrosion on the boom , mast and crossbeam , has anybody experienced this before on there boats .If so did you get repaired or replaced and what where the problems and the costs involved. Can anybody tell me where to get new replacements from, any help is appreciated as i would really like to become a PDQ owner and cruiser.I believe its from stainless steel fittings attached to aluminium without any barrier being used

I have managed to upload some photo's to Flickr , can you take a look and let me have your comments.
Thanks Huggi21

Perhaps it was something else - stray current?

I have the same age boat, kept in salt water, and have not seen this.

My rigging was replaced in '99 due to hurricane damage. Offshore spars provided the mast, boom, and shrouds to the original owner who did the refit.

No corrosion on the new hardware.

Not sure about the costs as I didn't own the boat then. I understand your concern about the corrosion in the pictures. I would have a good surveyor look it over and offer recomendations. If the advice is to replace the rigging then that should be reflected in the selling price.

Include an estimate or two for replacement in your offer, and be prepared for a bout of dueling experts. Don't be disappointed if the seller doesn't agree that something needs to be done. Its a buyer's market but you aren't the only buyer around!

The blistering is common on painted masts, I have 2 spars that I am refinishing this winter. Its possible to sand blast the extrusions, prep and repaint them, depending on the severity of the corrosion. It usually looks worse then it is. If needed I have a length of the original sail track that was used on your boat. James

Thanks for all your comments,i am having a difficult time in getting replacements for Mast, Boom and Crossbeam .Has anybody ever had to replace these items and where did you get them from, i contacted Seldon Spars who made the originals but they have not replied.Any help would be appreciated as i am a little wary in case there is more problems under the corrosion.

Relax, Huggi! This is probably not a big deal; your surveyor will tell you for sure. Trust James' reply above, he is the most experienced point of contact. In any event, getting a replacement mast built and shipped are way too expensive, no one is going to discount a sale that much. If it matters this much to you, you should go find a different boat.

This is called "Dutch Uncle" advice; commons sense without sugar coating.

And while I'm picking on you, let me help in another regard. You only need one "topic" for this discussion. If you stick to one string people can tell who is responding to whom in time order.

But welcome to the PDQ community :D
