Performance Difference-Classic vs. Altair

Post by mikemak777 »

The Altair has an extra 4 1/2 feet of mast heighth. Can anyone comment as to how that affects sailing performance? I would think it would make the Altair faster, but just how much? Perhaps owners of each model could post their average speed in certain wind and wave conditions.

What have Classic owners done to make their boats go faster? ..square top main? bigger foresail?

Thanks for your input,

Mike.

I can't comment on the original mast height performance as I have not sailed a boat with the shorter mast however I have found that the sailing speeds I have experienced are generally better than what I was lead to expect based on comments I read on line.
I have not changed anything other than the original main sail battens which were far too flexible. Using heavier battens improved the sail shape.
Once the wind gets over 15 knots I can sail at double digits. My best speed has been about 13 knots.

Thanks, Henry for your input. Do you happen to know the sail area of your main?

I don't know the sail area of my main. The Multihull Maven web site lists it as 331 square feet.
( checked my manual today - it confirms 331 sq. ft.)
