Fastener size - bay windows on PDQ 32

Post by thinwater »

I'm planning to replace some of the screws with snaps and make some Sunbrella window covers... but I forgot to bring a sample screw home. so that I can order from Sailrite.

Anyone know the size?

Did you end up using straight Sunbrella or the Sunbrella plus with the soft backside?

Sunbrella. I used it for covers on polycarbonate windows on my last boat for ~ 6 years, with no ill effect.

Were you able to get a #10 screw with a snap to attach an exterior window shade?

We want to install sun protection for both the side and front LEXAN sidelights on MIDORI.

We haven't found hardware to use the existing # 10 screw holes to attach sun covers.

Any suggestions?

No, I was not able to find #10 fasteners, so I used #8 fasteners, only used corners and alternating fasteners, and I bedded the snaps in 3M 5200. After a summer, it seems very solid.

The way I figure, the screw were ONLY for installation, and the windows are 98% secured by the adhesive. 3M 5200 may be fairly tenacious, but in my expereince it will NOT prevent removing a snap with a screw driver. I have also used 3M 5200 to re-bed stripped snaps, and seems to work fine for those that are not under real tension, say, on the dogger.

The covers REALLY help with the AC load, keep the windows a bit cleaner, and help with heat in the winter. We do take them off when cruising, but sometimes leave them when day sailing. Also, lubing the snaps really helps.

Good lucK! If you find #10 fasteners, please post it. I got mine from Sailrite.
