Kayak storage

Post by amytom »

Spent some more time down at Key Largo. Starting to get used to that area.
One of the things that would be nice to have down there would be a couple of kayaks. The dinghy just cant get into some places.

Im sure others have found a place to stash a couple of sit on tops: where?

They have to be out of the way but also stay put in the case of rough seas on the way down.

We've traveled a bit with a 10-foot kayak:

Lashed to the stauncians fore and aft seems to be secure, right where it is shown (the back is lashed to the shroud). If the kayak is no more than 10 feet long, you should be able to get past it, up onto the upper deck.

We played with the foredeck; no go.

Yeah, they're great.

Drew,

Doesnt the kayak get in the way walking forward? Or do you step up and over?

Yes, it is in the way some. But I can step up onto the upper deck. With only one kayak, we simply go the other way most (not all) of the time.

With a 10-foot kayak it just fits from shroud to the aft edge of the bow hatch, which I didn't want to obstruct. If they are any shorter than 10 feet, there will be more room to step up. Any longer, and there will be trouble.

It does not foul any of the running rigging; the sheets are all outside.

Having a kayak would be cool. We have jerry cans lashed on deck where Drew keeps his though. We'd need a different solution.

Check out Garhauer - they make stainless steel brackets that bolt to two stanchions and hold the kayak outboard. This company makes excellent, robust products.

I've also thought about brackets on top of the davits. Might try that later.

However, we experienced a 60 knot squal yesterday and it's still there!

I have every intention of reporting back with my expereinces after a season.

I looked at them on line and that seems like a great idea. Do you have them on your boat? I'm wondering if they get in the way while docking or would tangle the genoa sheets?

if you have the self tacking jib - no problem - but with a genoa, i would think it would depend upon how far aft it comes when sheeted in tightly, how high it is cut and the angle of the sheets - it might be possible to place the mounts on stanchions further aft of the sheeting angle - good luck!

I think Mikemac77 nailed it. My genoa and spin sheets flap all around the sides, outside the lifelines.

We just returned from 6 days on the water with the kayak. I like the side deck location for one kayak. If I wanter 2... well that seems like cramming 6 gallons in a 5-gallon bucket. I don't know how and wish I did; kayaking is well enjoyed by 2.
