Seized Sheaves

Post by thinwater »

I'm thinking that both my jib and main halyards are seized. The genoa has been a bear to hoist for years, but since I leave it up, I din't care. Easy to drop. Now, suddenly, the main is the same. At first I thought it was the new main, but now I think the timing was simply coincidental.

Has this happened to others? I any tips? I'm thinking of dealing with it tomorrow, and given that work at the masthead is always painful, any tips would be helpful.

I'm sure you already thought of these but are you using the same halyard? Did you go up in line diameter?

Are any of your mast slugs/cars binding especially at the battens? To avoid the trip up the mast I would raise the old main first and see if it also binds.

Original halyard.

The new main goes up hard but drops easy. It does not appear that any slugs bind.

Going up the mast is easier than switching mains.
