Headroom on 32?

Post by Wbr2974 »

Hello all..
Potential new owner here. I am looking at PDQs specifically the 32 and 36.
I very much like both boats but find myself leaning towards the 32.
I understand there isn't much in the saloon without the hatch open on the 32 but what about in the hulls?
I'm 6"2 and wonder about the doors to the head and aft staterooms.
I am in the Annapolis area and if anyone nearby would care to show me their boat??
I'm selling my Hans Christian 33 in order to cruise the Bahamas and the keys and really want a shallow draft and the PDQ
Seems the perfect boat for what I want. Thanks to all in advance..

Pactical Sailor did a review a few months ago:
http://www.practical-sailor.com/issues/ ... 819-1.html

I've never put a tape on it. My daughter can just walk under the closed slider (5'2") with just an inch or so to clear.

In the hulls there is a lot more height. I'm not sure I can reach the liner in the galley. Even in the cabins, I doubt it is an issue. The bunks are standard queen, not some "marine" twin size.

MY boat is in Deale, MD (20 minutes south from Annapolis), but I live an hour from there. If you send me a PM (or there is an e-mail link on my blog) perhaps we can set up a time on nice spring day. We're getting them now and then!

Thanks for your reply and generous offer.
My only concern was having to duck to get into the aft cabin.
We sure have had some nice weather around here lately. I'm actually on the eastern shore in Oxford md.
I will send you a pm with my contacts and will graciously accept your offer for a tour of your boat.
In my mind I have already decided on a 32 but have not ruled out the 36 yet.
Thanks again and if anyone is at their boat who could measure the aft cabin door height for me I would appreciate it.
When I went to look at a Gemini years ago the first thing I did was bang my head going in the hulls and that pretty much ended the boat for me..
Thanks all

^^ I spent the night anchored in Oxford just a few days ago. Darn.

I've never hit my head (5'8"), but I can't remember how much clearance there is. At 6'2" I'm thinking it's close. But there is more in the cabins.

I would also ask about the clearance across the salon in the PDQ 36. I'm not sure. To get the height, they dropped the floor lower in the PDQ 36, perhaps 6 inches, and that makes some difference in waves. The PDQ 32 has a very high bridge deck, because the slider is used to keep the cabin top low. It must be 18 inches higher than the Gemini, and when you are beating into 20 knots, it makes a difference.

Headroom through the doors: 70-72" x 16" wide
Min headroom in the hulls (over the counters): 75"
Headroom in the middle: well over 7'
Headroom in cabins: 77"

I'm almost 6'4 and have no problems with headroom in the hulls in our 32.

We leave the hatch open except when it is raining. With the hatch closed you have to duck, but it's only for a moment as you are either sitting in the salon or going into the hulls.

The most important areas are the galley and beds. I have no problem fitting in the galley. I'm about at the limit for the berths -- someone over 6'4" would have a problem fitting without being a bit diagonal.

It is a bit cramped in the bathroom. No problem using the sink/vanity, but it's more comfortable sitting down to shower.

I too was considering a 32 versus 36. Both are fine boats, but we opted for the 32. The forward net area on the 32 (i.e. the "lounge") is a real delight.
