Rope clutches ?
Any clue what brand the original rope clutches are? Specifically on the starboard side by the helm . We have a couple on our new boat with broken handles. Any opinions on replacements ? Spin lock, Lewmar, Antal ? Input appreciated.
Cheers

Re: Rope clutches ?
I should of added are replacement handles available ? They seem a bit under size in general so I'm not against upgrading
Re: Rope clutches ?
If there is significant load on the line, releave the tension by taking load onto a winch. Forcing them is probably how they were broken. I don't think they are undersize.

Mine are older Spinlock XA. Not all boats use the same parts, so you may have something different.
A few minutes with Google revealed the following. I hope it helps. I've yet to break one, but if you are farther south, UV is a bugger.

Drew,
If that picture is from your boat the one on the end isn't looking to healthy.

Not my boat. The only good pic I had was good enough to identify, but shaded.
This is a discontinued model, though it was very common and parts are still widely available. If it needs replaced, it is simple to drop the ceiling and access the bolts.

Re: Rope clutches ?
Thank you Thinwater,
Those are the units. I found some handles on line that I believe are correct , will see. If you lift the handle there is a XA and rope size marked there.
Hope to be sailing soon, slow start this year in New England
Cheers

Re: Rope clutches ?
I have the same - spinlock XA. Recently broke one and replaced all 8 as they are 20 years old, and brittle. Cost was about $15 each.

Re: Rope clutches ?
I just busted a rope clutch handle, and decided to get the $40 service kit from defender.com (http://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?id=1501739) so I could replace the cracked sides as well. The installation was straight-forward. I highly recommend using a silicone based lubricant on the handle/cam joint. I am using B'laster brand (http://blastercorp.com/Silicone-Lube) that I bought at Home Depot. The clutches are closing much easier now--no need to force the 20-year-old plastic handles!
