solar vents

Post by Timothyamoll »

Forgive me if this was previously covered. Ive been messing with the two solar vents for the aft cabin this summer replacing various parts. I noticed when winterizing this weekend we are starting to get some mold in one of the aft cabins so not enough air movement. Have any of you replaced the solar vents with dorade style vents ? Plastimo makes a pretty nice abs dorade box with vent for about the same money as a new solar vent
thanks

Where is the mold? Could it be a window leak?

As for cleaning the mold, Formula B beats all comers. IT will also keep it from coming back. I resentfully bought a boat that looked like a Jackson Pollack painting inside it was so bad. It cleaned up in a few hours with a brush and a carpet cleaning vac.

Another thing to consider is a tiny dehumidifier. Consider, for example, that I don't care how much air you move, when you have snow on the roof this spring there will be condensation (air is warmer than the roof).

I've never been that impressed with ventilation alone. The Evadri is top drawer for keeping a boat fresh.

The mold is just on the carpet type liner. I found CLR mold remover worked pretty well. The boats been closed up pretty tight the last 5-6 weeks due to work and the passing of my dad. The boat is tight and we had no issues over the summer.
Once I get her hauled and covered we will leave a few hatches open to help air flow. She's on a mooring most of the summer in Buzzards bay and there's plenty of breeze so I think we will give the dorade type vents a try next summer.

Sounds like you have a plan you like. Just remember that dorades snag lines unless very wisely located. Additionally, I don't think a dorade on the back cabin is going to feel much wind.
