Rectangular porthole hatches, part number needed

Post by BruceW »

Side rectangular porthole hatches, both sizes
Does anyone have the manufacturer and part number for the porthole hatches on each side of the PDQ32
Mine are starting to leak, so I think it’s time to change them out

I'm pretty sure the plastic side hatches are Beckson "Newport" models. They used to be called "rain drain" I believe. See here: http://www.beckson.com/ports.html. The model size is basically the height and width of the windows. I *think* the two sizes used on the 32 would be the 410s and 512s, but don't hold me to that, measure yourself.

PS, if they are leaking, I'd first start with cleaning the window and gasket carefully. Maybe recondition the gasket with a little armorall. Clean the window with a fine plastic polish to remove any small etches that would permit water ingress.

If that doesn't work, Beckson sells new gaskets which would be significantly less expensive (and easier) than replacing the entire port. They sell the lenses as well.

Warning: If you are experiencing leaks, do not just keep tightening down the dogs. If the gasket is compressed and you continue to tighten the dogs, eventually the frame will crack or break where the lens connects. They you will have no alternative but to replace the whole thing.

Yes, everything Iriemon said. Pull the gaskets, clean, and condition. Even new hatches will leak in a year if the gaskets get dirty in behind.

The hatches are 5x12" and 7x14".

I just ordered replacement lenses (smoke color) from Defender.com here:
https://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pa ... id=3983200

The replacement gaskets are here:
https://www.defender.com/product.jsp?na ... id=3464731

If anyone wants to clean the lenses, I have had good luck with the Rustoleum Headlight Restoration Kit:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Rust-Oleum-H ... /147633275
Just use the 2000 grit pad and the polisher pad + polish. No need for the other grits of sandpaper that come in the kit. Works with a cordless drill, so you can use it at anchor! =)

Good luck, the porthole leaks are a pain!
