depth gauges

I just sailed my newly acquired PDQ 36, from Fla to the Statue of Liberty, I
thought the 2'10" draft, would keep me off the ground, I was wrong, after a few
bumps I realized that my starboard placed depth sounder had no idea what the
depth on the port side was. my solution move the fish finder to the port hull,
now I have 2 depth finders. what does a fish finder do? It never found any fish
for me. It came with the boat, no manual.

I have a hydrographic surveying background. Our PDQ SeaPaws has only a digital
reading "depth sounder" I miss not having a recording fathometer i.e

fishfinder. When the digital unit loses the digitized depth (dirty, shallow or
turbulent water conditions) the "fishfinder" generally will still show the
bottom and the trend of the bottom contour. I am trying to decide which
recording fathometer to get. I want one that is intergrated with a
GPS/chartplotter to save space and since my use for the fathometer is not for
fishing, there is no need for a dedicated screen for depth, a split screen would
be fine to me. I intend to keep a digital unit installed on out boat for a
constant reading, it is a good idea having a unit in each hull. Oh yea, I always
turn off the fishfinder feature, because it is annoying when looking at the
depth recordings. The "fish" still show up as blips or clouds at whatever depth
they might be in the water column. These returns can also can be caused by other
debris in the water or turbulent water like when passing the thru prop wash of
large vessels

Hope this helps,
Chester
