After many frustrating hours of work and numerous calls to the factory, our 4 year old Precision Temp water heater could not be made to operate again after a lightning strike fried the electronics. We finally gave up on it and the prospect of a new one for $1500.00 and bought an Excel demand hot water heater. They are available on eBay or through the same vender at excelamerica.com. for about $300.00 plus shipping. The heater is remarkably efficient uses no boat power resources other than propane (the gas is ignited using 2 D size batteries) and takes up a third of the space of our former one. Installation is strait forward and ours hangs from the aft bulkhead in the starboard aft deck locker. We actually had to widen the opening of the hatch to remove the Precision Temp and I suspect the boat was built around it. Email me if you care for more details and photos of the installation.

Long history on this topic. Check the "Water Heater" topic under the PDQ 36 forum section. The Wolter we are talking about is the earlier version of the current Precision Temp. Lots of good info there, including several of us who have installed the Excels with good results.
