Kato Marine Dinghy Davits (braces & mounts)

Post by maxicrom »

I mmentioned to Phil (S\V Sunshine) about bracing my Kato davits - he asked if I would post some pictures. My davit bases were originally mounted inside the rail on the rub rail and at an angle going out from the life rail. It was a bad angle and put a lot of stress on the railing (which on our year, 1991, is not substantial to begin with). I had checked with Kato about angle base mounts to move the davits to the outside of the rub rail and they were $100 each, I had these made out of SS for $125 and used the same upper rail mounts. I added the side braces and the whole unit is much stronger now - with the additon of the Torqeedo outboard on our STBD side our 8' Zodiac fast roller with the 8hp Yamaha is still too wide and too heavy for the davits - but this rig is way better than before and is fine with the local trips we make. When we are ready to take off for a while we'll probably go with a 7' Bombard Rib and a 4hp motor which will be a better match.

Mike:

Thanks for the davit photos. My "to do" list just keeps getting longer and longer.
