Bulkhead veneer cracking near salon doors

Post by MagicDragon »

Hello, all - we've just noticed cracks in the bulkhead wall that surrounds the two doors going into both salons. Due to the lightning strike last year, we went over all structural and system very well during last summer. We are quite sure that these were not there last year, and have happened fairly recently - either as a result of being launched, or as a result of being stored on the hard this past winter, as our yard did not put supports under the bridge deck.

I'm posting pictures of the cracking in the veneered walls - it appears to us that it goes through the wall, since it is apparent from either side of the door. James - if you are listening and have any feedback, we'd appreciate hearing from you. Other feedback appreciated as well. Thanks to one and all...

Hey Magic Dragon,

I have seen this a couple of times on various boats. With the door cut out, this is the weak point in the bulkhead. The first thing to do is determin the extent of the damage. Are the cracks just at the top inboard corners. Do they extend into the fiberglass tabbing between the bulkhead and deck and if so, whats the condition of the tabbing. Is there anything going on at deck level. You can look at the tabbing by removing the vinyl covered cap liners on both sides of the bulkhead. Depending on whats found, the fix can be as simple as prepping the area and injecting epoxy into the crack.

Hope this helps. James
