Windlass and rode for a 36

Posted by Jeff on January 24, 2002 at 21:05:00:

We are thinking of adding a windlass to our 36 and have a few questions

1) What make & model of windlass is being used by others?
2) What anchor rode do you use with it?
3) Does anyone carry all chain, and if so, how does the added weight affect
sailing?
4) Are there any windlasses to be avoided? (feel free to email privately on that
one if you want to)
Thanks folks. We appreciate the feedback.

Hi Jeff,
I mounted a Sprint1000 vertical windlass with drum on starboard bow right next
to cleat after moving it to the right. This was after consulting with Simon
Slater. The deck is cored with plywood in the area of the cleat and is very
strong and will not crush. You can see this if you climb inside the compartment
on a sunny day

I use 160ft of HT 5/16 chain spliced to 100ft of 9/16rope. The chain stacks
nicely with a nice drop and the system has worked great for three years now. I
use a 35 Delta plow and a 1/2"rope bridle off each cleat to a chain hook (about
25ftlength to hook)

The cables are routed thru watertight fittings down the closet back bulkhead to
thebilge and on thru to the relay located under the salon seat

If you have any install questions let me know

Chet
