Anchor rode - chain vs. line

Post by GaryWizard »

I am living aboard my 36 LRC (eastern Caribbean right now) and after an anchor rode failure due to line chaff I'm re-thinking my current setup. I've got 50' of 5/16" chain & 300' of braided line on my primary anchor. Now I'm wondering whether I should have more chain (maybe 100'). As my waterline has already been raised I hate the idea of adding more weight, especially way forward where the chain sits.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

We use 100' of chain on our LRC with no adverse effect. We never deployed any line while anchored and never experienced dragging once the anchor was firmly set.

Think of it as an opertunity to clean out 75 pounds of junk. Clean all of the lockers to the floor and see what's there.

No question, more chain is the correct answer around coral.
