Winds for Gulf crossing

Post by Kassf »

We have heard it's tough to cross the Gulf after November, due to the winds being mostly from the north. Is that the case? We're trying to figure out when to go over to the Abacos, but we have family obligations at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Thanks for your experience/feedback!

If you are on a time schedule don't do it. You are not yet ready for this type of cruising.

We did it before with a friend in late October. We are not really on a time schedule, we can wait for the right winds. We had just heard different things from different people about the winter months being mostly northerly so we wanted to hear from others ' experience.

as a general rule the winds from nov-mar are ne. with that said there are fronts, which make for wind shifts, and there are calm stretches, but to terry's point you need to be patient & flexible. don't get trapped by a schedule. on our first trip south we learned that "you can name the time or the place but not both". it's true.

Yeah we hear that from others. It's not our first trip but we went in October before. We will shoot for early November.
