Emergency Tiller

Does anyone have an emergency tiller I could borrow for measurements? My 36 came without one and I want to add one before we head out on our next trip. I will have one fabricated but I need either a drawing, a picture, or an actual part that I can take measurements from. Unless someone has an extra they want to sell???

Thanks,
Sam

Sam, There was one on SecondWind. If you contact Don he might be willing to show it to you if he still has it. It was nothing but a piece of bent pipe with a slit in the end. He's on this forum.

I have one for a 32 that I could get the dimensions off of to duplicate.
Are they the same?

So...I borrowed Brendan's emergency tiller and now have a metal fabricator manufacturing one for Lady of the Lake. Now for the next question...believe it or not, there are no deck penetrations to pass the tiller handle through, looks like Lady of the Lake has never had an emergency tiller. I see where I need to cut the hole but what size stainless deck plate do I install? the smallest I can find is 3" ID which seems a bit large for the 1-1/4 inch OD handle. But that looks like the size of the deck plates currently installed on Brendan's PDQ. Can someone tell me how big their deck plate is and send me a photo? Also, do I need one on each side or is one on the starboard side acceptable? And do I need to fabricate some kind of backing plate for that deck plate due to the stress that will be on the deck if I need to use the emergency tiller?

Thank you all,
Sam

I would go with the three inch, getting it lined up will be a bear and having the extra slack will help.

Yes I would definitely do both sides. The one time we used it our starboard rudder (with the primary quadrant) was jammed (throughly the hull) so we pulled the cross bar and steered with only the port rudder. Not quite as good as both and no autopilot but we finished our vacation steering to a star with the tiller.

As for backing, the tiller should go down over the rudder post far enough to self support, should be very little lateral stress there.

No, I do NOT think you want any extra room. When the tiller is in use the deck plate becomes the upper bearing for the emergency tiller handle. A loose fit and the tiller will not work, possibly break.

I'm sorry, but you need to focus on drilling the hole the right place. It is a metal fill plate, like for you fuel or sewage, probably 1 1/2". Check the size, though.

Thanks, I measured the on one Brendan's 36 and it had in ID of 2.5 inches, and the tiller is 1.5 inch OD.
