Boom vang suggestions

Post by catalacmarc »

Friends, my '91 Capella appears to have been rigged with preventers and I am changing over to a vang at the mast. Can the turning blocks on the cabin roof be used to run the vang line to the cockpit? Loads on a vang can be high. Using a Dyneema webbing strap around the base of the mast in leiu of drilling more holes in the mast to mount it. And, yes the angle is shallower than optimal.
Thanks, Marc

My understanding is that end boom sheeting and a long main sheet traveler largely obviates the need for a boom vang? And, that a boom vang doesn't serve the same purpose as a preventer? Are you trying to shape the mainsail or prevent inadvertent jibes?
