Heads up- Northern Lights Generator Ground

Post by makala »

On a recent trip to the Abacos our generator shut down (Northern Lights M673D). It turned out to be three ground wires all broke off from the same ring terminal that attached to the block. These are related to the shutdown switches, so obviously the generator wouldn't run. Unfortunately, these are not visible until you remove the valve cover since the air intake (on the valve cover) is just above them.

To remedy this I installed a blue sea terminal block and ran each of the three black leads to it using separate ring terminals. I then installed redunant ground wires to the block as shown below.

If you haven't checked it in a while you may want to remove the valve cover and check it out... and maybe check your air filter while you're at it.

I don't think it was a very good design to have three very short leads running to a single ring terminal without much strain relief.

Hopefully this helps someone.
