Solar panel wiring

Post by PDQfan »

if you have solar, how did you wire the controller to the batteries? My guy suggested the other side of the house battery switch so that it still charges when the bank is switched off. Wondering what you all have done. I have seen posts about wiring to a shunt and also to the bus bars to take advantage of the combiner. I'm just not sure which way to go.

Thanks,
Bryan

Hi Bryan !

The solar on Easy Riders was wired this way when I purchased her, and it seems to be working well: the positive and negative from the solar controller are wired directly to the house battery bank.

The first photo is the house bank - 4 Trojan 6 volt wired to two 12v.

The second photo shows the negative from the solar controller wired to the end of the house bank.

The third photo shows the positive from the solar controller wired to the other end of the house bank.

The solar controller is mounted in the starboard stateroom by the rear hatch.

The small wires on battery # 2 and # 3 go to a digital voltage meter, which is mounted under the second companionway step.
