Adding Deck Hatches Above Shower & Galley

Post by MikeH »

Here's some info on parts for adding deck hatches above the shower and galley (for those of us who don't have them).

I'm using Bowmar N-1000-10A hatches with a 10-3/4 x 10-3/4 cutout. Found them at West Marine (online).

The trim ring part number is NT-2000-OFF-W for the 1-inch trim ring, off white. I couldn't find the off-white in stock anywhere, so I went with the black ones that Defender had in stock.

The screens are NS2000-EX. I could not find in stock. Ordered from Bowmar / Pompanette at $72 each plus shipping, 4-week lead time.

To Order from Bowmar: Tracy West, 603-826-5791, bomar@pompanette.com.

Hi Josh !

Here are photos. You can see the amount of light that was added, and the ventilation is great. A heads up if ordering from West Marine - one of the hatches that they sent had been previously installed by someone else and returned to the store. There was some cosmetic damage. I should have opened and inspected the box as soon as I received it.

Looks great Mike. Added to our list!

I was considering installing a 12v exhaust vent in the shower on the SB wall, similar to the vent the generator has - tucked tight under the toe rail. I found a pair of waterproof fans that would do the trick, and fabricate a housing for it. Grab the DC power from the dome light.

Not necessary anymore with the overhead hatch? are you finding the moisture clearing out now on its own?

Hi Josh - the ventilation is pretty good with the hatch open and the head portlight open - more than I expected - and especially at anchor. The shower dries out fairly quickly.

Adding the exhaust fan would provide more ventilation when there's not a breeze out.

When it's warmer or breezeless, I have been using a Ryobi portable fan to make it more comfortable in the head. I put the fan at the steps down from the salon and aim it towards the head. The fan breeze makes it more comfortable when shaving, or putting on make-up and blow-drying hair, as the case may be.
