Yanmar 'dry starting' procedure

Post by bstrong »

When diesels are used regularly the startup is very standard. However, when unused for many weeks we need to be concerned about unlubricated bearing surfaces during startup.

We have decided to use this procedure in that case [and request comments]:

When starting after extended non-use we hold down the Yanmar red 'kill' [fuel shutoff] button while we crank until we see the oil pressure guage show pressure then release the button. We get instant start upon release [no surprise].

The tradeoff is we get a slow crank until the bearings are lubed but the cylinders get no fuel initially.

Any comments? Apparently Yanmar suggest this for the initial startup of new engines - but it is not part of a continuing recommendation.
