Forward compartment leakage

Post by Mr Busy »

Has anyone else had any problem with water leaking into the port generator compartment through the vents. I took delivery of mv/59 last week and ran into some very rough seas, 15 to 20. If any one has concerns for how this boat handles very rough seas, do'nt worry it will do fine. The only real problem was we took a pretty good bit of water into the compartment.

Leakage

Post by Rejoice »

We experienced the same thing crossing Erie in 6 to 8s (occasionally higher) in both forward compartments. We have hull 51. Haven't been in any other significant seas so don't know if problems is on-going. Haven't noticed leakage from rain, however.

Forward compartment leakage

Where is the water getting in - and then where is it going? Are there any suggested fixes? Immersing a genset does not sound attractive!

water leak in forward compartment

Post by Mr Busy »

The water came in through the inboard vent holes underneath thr deck. PDQ modified the cupping area on the inside of the compartment and it stopped most of the water except in very rough seas. They were very helpful.

We cruised extensively last summer, doing the loop of Georgian Bay,Lakes Huron, Erie and Ontario. Needless to say, we experienced significant waves at times and yes, we did take on some water at the port bow air inlet for the generator. (no concerns for wetting the sound-proof enclosed generator)
However, it should be pointed out that this was the result of virtually burying the bow into the on-coming waves and the spray action was so heavy that the three windshield wipers could hardly keep the windows clear (no rain)......staying on the fly bridge was out of the question, for safety reasons. On one occasion, we had to slow to about 2-3kts so as not to bury the bows and the housed anchor. Under such conditions, one should expect that water will enter vent-holes, and boat speed should be reduced.....the wave height was in the 6-10ft range.
The good news indeed, is that the MV-34 can take serious pounding in the relatively short choppy waves of the Great Lakes and at no time we felt any concern for the safety of the boat.
However, while on the subject of "leaks" I suspect (not confirmed) that in such heavy seas, we must have taken on some lake water into our fresh water holding tank as well, having regularly buried the overflow pipe.....just a thought to bear in mind as we plow through the waves with our invincible power cats. :)

We found that a disposable 16 oz beverage glass fit just right inverted into the vent from below and stopped the water when on rough passages.
