leaky aft steps

Posted by Doug on September 13, 19100 at 16:42:39:

After Cindy and I got our PDQ (hull 3) we noticed that our aft steps gradually
start filling with water. A quick taste test proved the water was salt water. Is
this a problem anyone else has noticed with their boat?
Cheers!
Doug

Our PDQ-32 (#9) always leaked under the aft gasket that covered the seam between
the bottom and top molds, filling up the area under the starboard steps. You
might be able to fix this with caulk from the inside, but I never did. Our boat
was destroyed in hurricane Georges. When I rebuilt it I fiberglassed the two
molds together. The boat no longer leaks. I also made many other changes. The
story is documented in Wreck and Resurrection by David Harris, ISBN
1-893561-03-8, $14.95, 192 pages, many illustrations, order line 800-345-6665

Avilable in some book stores soon.

Hi Doug, If your speaking of water in the watertight compartment under the
steps,I had a problem there on the starboard side. It turned out to be a leaky
inspection plate on the vertical part of the first step. I sealed it shut, but
still get some seepage. The port side is as dry as a bone. Go figure!

Hull 48; port aft watertight compartment leaks full to waterline
when under sail. Nothing at anchor, nothing under motor

still trying to find leak. Plan to pressurize compartment
when I get back to boat in early Nov.

After we purchased Next Exit (#28)last year we noticed that the stbd quarter was
quite low

We pumped many gallons of salty water out of the hold. We strongly recommend
that
all orings be inspected and probably changed on a regular basis. Some virtually
disintegrated in our hands

Sally & I delivered hull 64 to Florida from North Carolina. It had been through
some really bad weather north of here. The Port Aft air tight compartment was
half full. I dried it out and it never took another drop in the next 1000 miles.

I think I had heard of one boat leaking around the aft chainplates and re
bedding them took care of that
