dinghy on davits

Posted by Captin Hank Walden on October 17, 2000 at 13:05:00:

I am contemplating retrofitting the PDQ bench/davits on my 1998 PDQ 36. I will
be carrying an inflatable dinghy with outboard motor on the davits. If anyone
has the bench/davits option, can you tell me what the maximum size dighy I can
carry on those davits

Thanks

"Distant Music" (Hull #75) has the new bench-&-davits system. We recently
replaced our hard-sided dinghy with an inflatable. The Apex dealer in Norfolk
was kind enough to bring out both the Apex 10 Lite (10 ft 0 in) & the 9 Lite

The 10 would fit, but it was tight in the space; concerned about chafe, we
settled for the 9, which is an easy fit

The bigger issue with the bench+ system is where to stow the engine when you
take it off the dinghy; there's no protected space to in which to hang it. We
carry the engine in one of the bow lockers on long trips. (There's room to lift
the dinghy with its 8 hp engine on its transom; I just don't like going
"outside" with all that weight hangine back there.)

We have a 9ft. 4 in. Zodiac and still have a few inches to spare (in the front
only). If you have an overall length approarching the max, a minor problem may
be how to hang it so it is centered within the hulls. On ours, hanging the
Zodiac from the transom and the front bow/towing ring, we have space in the
front but none in the rear.
