moisture under mattress

Posted by Cindy on June 05, 2001 at 14:25:00:

We have a new PDQ32 and just made the long trip from Whitby to Massachusetts. We
noticed that under the mattress there is alot of moisture. Does anyone have a
solution to this problem?

We had this problem too. I cut strips of 4x1" cedar and laid them crosswise
under the mattress with a 3" gap between each maintained by small blocks of the
same wood on the inboard end and half-lap joints into a strip of the same cedar
laid length wise on the outboard end. This keeps the matress off the cold FG and
cedar has mild anti-fungal properties. The matress still needs lifting up for
airing when there is condensation on the FG

Congratulations on the new boat. I was with Ron & Susan on Tanah-Keeta 36-89 and
we left Whitby on May 15, very cold. We own Duet 32-22. We have cruised
extensively on her and the moisture we found was only on our side. Probably just
from body heat. We put a product under the mattress that we picked up at West, I
think it is called "dry Mattress". It looks like thick paper. We also prop the
mattress up each morning to let it "air out"
If the water was coming from a hatch, you would find a trail of water down the
wall in the carpet

Welcome to the board ... which hull number are you and what it the boat name?
Is the moisture in both cabins, or only one? Is the storage area under the bunk
wet too? If it is only one cabin, and the area under the bunk is not wet, maybe
it is possible that you have a leaking hatch/window?

We have hull #3248 and our boat name is "Knotty Cat"

We do not have a leaky hatch and got some advice from a couple of other owners
that we will try.
