"MOJO's" return!

Posted by Jack Coulter on June 21, 2001 at 13:59:00:

To those interested, Mojo left Bermuda Friday am @ 0600, unfortunately back to
the States, instead of The Azores. All my life a job keeps getting in the way of
what I want to do! Maybe next year. The passage was very uneventfull, the first
day was an absolute mill pond, and we motor sailed the first 24 hours. The
tropical storm that had plagued Texas and the E. Coast was still kicking around,
but "Herb" assured us it was goin' North. Had absolute great sailing the next
two days with winds from the south @ 15 to 22, top boat speed for the trip was a
photographed 11.5 GPS, impressed my two mono hull crew members! Highest seas we
saw were 4 to 6 ft., unbelievable. We then had very light wind and motor sailed
the rest of the way to N.C., arriving last night around 1800. On departure from
Bermuda we had a full tank of fuel(52gals) and five extra 5 gal plastic fuel
cans. We ran alternate engines every 5 or 6 hours and had about 1/8 of a tank
left when we tied up to our dock. Gps fix from Bermuda to the outside sea bouy
at Beaufort inlet was 595 miles with about another 70 miles to our dock in
Oriental, so all in all great fuel economy out of the Yamahas. Filled the water
tank and carried an extra 18 gals of water in plastic containers. We always have
a crew member that likes luxury showers!! Again, the Marine Air wind gen and the
solar panels took care of constantly running the refrig. , and turning on the
radar from the sleep mode every 15 or 20 minutes during night watches, the AP
was never disengaged. The SSB, sucks voltage outa the system, especially in
transmit, but it's sure reassuring to talk to "Herb" everyday at 1600. If I had
to install another piece of equipment, it would probably be a water maker. Three
of a crew is ideal on the boat, on 3 hours off 6 hours. Anyway, have faith in
your PDQ, it'll take you anywhere!! If anyone has any questions on going to
Bermuda, i.e. dockage, route, etc. I would be more than happy to be of any
assistance. In two hours of being back to work this a.m. Bermuda was a distant
memory! Best/Jack
