Shrink Wrapping

Posted by Cindy on August 05, 2001 at 17:49:00:

We are new owners of a PDQ32 and will be storing it outside this coming Winter

We are trying to decide whether or not to shrink wrap the boat. Does anyone have
any reasons for or against shrink wrapping?

Welcome to the group! Phenix was shrink-wrapped for the 1st 3 years of winter
storage in Toronto. The last 2 winters, here in Chicago, she was not

My feeling on this is mixed. Although not wrapping makes for a very dirty
environment, wrapping may trap moisture where it shouldn't be. I think it comes
down to personal preference (and cost). I am not going to shrink-wrap this
winter, but I might get a huge tarp to keep UV off the black stripe around the
cockpit

I would also recommend keeping lines out of the sun. Keep in mind all of this is
coming from a boat that has spent its life in fresh water and freezing winters

Where are you storing?

It comes down to where you are storing it. If the area is realative clean, don't
worry about it. I have the epuipment and "wrapped" my other boat every winter
for 11 years but I lived near a military airport with a lot of soot in the air

I also had teak decks

Right now I have the boat in a storage yard with oak trees around the area and
they stain it badly so I put a big tent of the wrap over the back 2/3 of the
boat. If you are worried about hear underneath, leave the front and back open
and let the heat out. Good luck
