outboard mount on 32 aft rail

Posted by Chris Randolph on March 03, 2002 at 09:40:00:

I am looking at mounts for storing my dighy outboard on the aft rail of my 32-
any suggestions? I am a little concerned about the weight (60#)and exactly how
to mount it, given how the rail is constructed (i.e., no convenient vertical
supports for a t-mount)

Thanks,
Chris Randolph

First of all I just looked up the Raymarine instalations on page 123 of the 2001
cataloge and they show one that would work if you mounted it just off center
between the open storage areas in the back. A bit pricy
So now I look up the stainless parts that I used and guess what, They no longer
carry them at West

I will do some more digging and see if I can find a source

To be continued!

Thanks Marc, Dan. I have an Apex 9'RIB, and I would like to get the motor off of
it when underway. Marc, does this mount just attach to the single horizontal
stern rail, or does it descend to the deck in some way? The only vertical T in
my stern rail is in the center, and there is a second vertical support at the
same spot that bows outboard, which would prevent me from mounting the motor
outboard of the rail. You can email me directly at crandol@lumc.edu. Thanks,
Chris

I mount my dinghy motor on the center "T" of the aft rail, facing aft to miss
the brace. It actually leaves more room to get around, and my short shaft 4hp
Tohatsu 4 cycle doesn't touch the deck. It weighs 60#, but I wish I'd bought a
lighter, horsier motor for the dinghy. With an 8hp it would plane with 2 adults
aboard. I took it off the dinghy because it drug in the tops of short steep
chop. Dan has the better solution.

I assume you are diong this because you can't get the dink up high enough. I
glued some of those "D" rings down on the inside of the tubes in the forward end
of the dink. Then I made a wooden bracket just as wide as they are apart with
hooks on them. With that you can pull the dink up until it touches the davit. On
the stern I put on some "U" bolts on the outside on either side of the engine. I
added a second lifting pully and I can bring the engine up till it touches the
davit. Now I do not have to take the motor on or off at all

Less work, more fun!

Hi Chris,I installed an Edson mount on the inside stern rail. It's pricey, but
worth it. Made of 3/4" starboard & cast alum. It's maintainence free & still
looks new after 4 yrs. Consider a lift right next to it. I have a Garhauer, very
handy
