Introduction and Question

Posted by John Wade on May 06, 2002 at 16:57:00:

Just a short introduction. Michele and I have reserved September 2003 for the
delivery of our Altair. We are currently in the D.C. area and plan on living
aboard in south Florida/the Keys. With that said, we will be having some
quesitons and know this board as a good source of information. I am looking for
information on what tools you would recommend, both power and hand tools

Thanks.

Congradulations. Amen on the Dremel,I have 2. A cordless & an AC model. As a
tool nut,maybe I shouldn't comment,but a set of Vicegrips & a Leatherman tool
have proven invaluable to me

You made a good choice!
First, contact me (Rford@sha.state.md.us) if you are interested in the PDQ
Owners Assoc. The newsletter (I can send you a sample) is excellent and contains
many useful articles. Second, there are many PDQ's in your area, on the
Chesapeake Bay, if you need advice - we're in Balto. on a PDQ36

Regarding tools, I would include a good Dremmel tool in your kit. I use mine for
cutting holes, drilling, and the cut-off wheels are great for cutting stainless
bolts etc. Try to find tools that will have two or three uses and try to
minimize specialty tools. A good rechargeable drill. A good set of allen
wrenches (metric and US) are small but invaluable when you meet with that odd
size! Note that the Selden masts and furlers use a special "star" (similar to
torx) fitting instead of allen head. Selden does have a tool with multiple sizes
on it for their products. A complete set of electrical connectors with a GOOD
crimping tool. An inspection mirror. As Dan said, a complete set of sockets and
open end wrenches. Hope this helps?

Congratulations! Have you choosen a name yet. What will be your hull number?
Have you joined the Owner's association?
There are not too many "special" Tools. A set of sockets both metric and us,
same with the open end wrenches. They don't have to very big as most nuts and
bolts are under 5/8. A VOM A method of extracting the oil from the engine
through the dipstick whole

I am just loading Duet up for a cruise and will check to see if I have anything
special in my kit and get back to you. Why don't you contact me direct on
Duet@coastalnet.com
