Rig Tension
Posted by Dale Koonce on July 22, 1999 at 09:29:16:
My thanks to Kevin for hosting this board
I have a PDQ 32 Hull #36 which I enjoy sailing on the Chesapeake Bay
I am trying to figure out what the correct tension is for the rigging
I have contacted the factory and their only reply is that it should be tight
When I asked what is tight, the reply was very tight. Does anyone have a
suggestion as to what the tension on the rig should be?
Thaks for any help
Dale

This ia a great idea (the message board!)
RE rig tension. I have PDQ#20 R.H.M. Dauntless
My owners manual is sort of non commital on rig tension. Something about 'the
average man can depress the stays a modest amount when tensioned properly'.. or
something to that effect. This year I tensioned a little less than previous (my
4th year with the boat.) Coming back from Maine in moderate conditions, 15-20
kts. ,3 foot seas, tight reaching I noticed that the leeward stay was quite lose
and I could see the mast moving. This leads me to believe that tight, to very
tight is the proper setting. I tightened mine another 8-10 turns that evening
Thankfully without any mishap first. I am guessing that the turnbuckles are
probably at 85% of their travel.

I have followed this up with Rory at the PDQ factory. He told me that he had a
32 coming in in a few days and they would check the tension with a meter and
then let me know what the proper tension should be. I will post the information
on the bulletin board

Did PDQ ever follow through on the promise to provide you with rig tension data?
