Water in keel

Posted by Cindy #32048 on May 21, 2002 at 14:17:00:

We had water in one keel and drilled a small hole to let the water out. We were
going to fill the hole with epoxy but, not sure how to keep it from coming out
before it dries. Has anyone ever experienced water in their keels and if so, how
did you fix it. We still don't know how the water got in there and why it did
not come out the same way it went in.

We suspected we had water because one spot on the bottom of the keel was always
wet even though we could not see any cracks. I have just contacted PDQ and they
confirmed the drilling a hole is the only way to check. they also said that the
internal supports are only baffles to stop water from swishing around and do not
create separate compartments so that drilling only one hole is sufficient to
drain the entire keel.

How did you check for water in the keel?

Hi Kevin, drilling small holes at the bottom of the keel is the only way I know

Hi, the water may have come in thru a hairline crack where the keel meets the
hull. That's what I think happened to me.I removed the bottom paint along that
area & epoxied 2 layers of FG over it

The keel has 2 bulkheads dividing it into 3 hollow compartments. Holes must be
drilled at the bottom of each section to guarantee that all the water is
drained. A few holes must also be drilled at the top of the keel to let air in
so that all the water will drain

To fill the holes,I cut 1"x1'F/G squares, wet them down with thickened
epoxy, then shoved them into the hole. When it hardened I sanded them flush, then
filled with thick epoxy. Also, before filling,I tapered the hole with a
countersink bit

It's not as hard as it sounds.I estimate 15-20 gal drained out
