Capella outboards

Posted by Dan White on October 28, 2002 at 19:31:00:

Hi,
I am considering ordering a new Capella. Could anyone comment on whether the
standard outboards are strong enough to push the boat in nasty winds, say like a
squall that might blow up on the Chesapeake.

Dan,
You will be truly impressed by the power of these little engines. I have powered
my 36 against 42kts ( about 1kt SOG ). The one thing that really slows the boat
are large waves slapping the underside of the bridgedeck. There is no cracking
under there after 11 years of pounding into all kinds of weather, a real tribute
to the design and construction of the boat

Welcome to the PDQ clan. Where will you keep and sail the boat?

I delivered a 36 to the Miami boat show and ran into 40 knots of CONSTANT wind
dead on the nose after going through the Cross Over Bridge. We were pushing
ahead even in that

We have taken our 32 to the Bahamas and Florida several times and have never
been "stopped" by the weather. Of course, we try not to go dead into the wind
unless forced to, I have been hit by several thunder storms and usually take
them on a 30 degree angle or run with them till the worst of it is over

Good luck with your purchase.

Hi,I agree with Dan. The Yamaha 9.9 has a 3:1 reduction gear and a large prop

This torque develops a lot of power. Kia Orana & my boat, Here's 2 Life, crossed
Ablemarle Sound, in 30-40kts almost on the nose. Not recommended, but the
engines did fine. 3 weeks ago I had a similar expereience on (ugh)Delaware
Bay,and passed 4-5 sailboats. Plenty of power for our boats

Good luck with your new boat, your going to love it

Marc
