water in lazzerette

Hello
In general we have found that water in the lazzerette is due to the ingress of
water from yhe outboard motor well. The water sneaks in, at quite high pressures
in big seas, around the holes drilled in the aft bulkhead thatis at the back of
the engine compartment. We have tried two or three differnet methods of sealing,
but have found it challenging, in the end I believe we discovered that more is
more when it came to sealant around the various hoses and cables

Cheers

I had a small amount of water seep into the lazzerette and, as Simon stated, it
was entering as we motored from where the conduit entered the lazzerette in the
starboard engine well (on outboards). I applied a generous amount of sealant in
the motorwell and in the lazzerette and I regularly spray the cover gasket with
silicone. The lazzerete has stayed dry for nearly 3 years.

Thank you for your response, Simon. We appreciate your time

Some follow-up questions:[/i]

1) What is the function of the holes you mentioned that are in the bulkhead that
is the aft of the engine well? In other words, could these be sealed?
2) Would I be correct in interpreting your answer that it is virtually
impossible to completely seal the lazzerette?
3) Assuming the answer to # 2 is affirmative, would you recommend drilling some
drain holes in the floor of the lazzerrete? Or would that add to the problem in
high seas?

Although sometimes tricky, sealing the holes in the bulkhead, is the way to fix
the problem. I strongly reccomend repairing the problem at its source. The
thought of drilling drain holes to take care of the problem gives me the
willies, the amount of water activity in this area while under way is
substantive and I believe everything would be wet all the time
